Protocol Conversion

Gateways are protocol converters. Typically, two networks to which a gateway connects use different underlying protocols. The gateway facilitates compatibility between the two protocols. Depending on the types of protocols they support, gateways can operate at any level of the OSI model. The network converters we offer as EUTO Energy provide data transfer and conversion between two identical or two different industrial automation networks. Some of the supported protocols: CAN, EtherCAT, Slave, Modbus. These converters offer the advantage of low cost and easy implementation for all types of data conversion and can be easily used between serial bus, classical Fieldbus, Ethernet, Real-Time Ethernet applications or their combinations.

Protocol conversions are pre-programmed and optionally loaded into the device as firmware. Conversions that need the same physical network interface can be managed by a single device variant.

EUTO Protocol Converters

EUTO RTU devices are Remote Terminal Unit/Protocol Gateway device that provides data transmission between the field and the central station. It already supports all protocols used in energy automation applications on this device. Counter, protection relay, analyzer etc. in the field. It communicates with different devices over different protocols at the same time, and ensures that the collected data is converted into protocols related to the center or other units and transmitted. The device has been designed to provide all industrial compatibility required by this field. eRTU-X101 is the main device used for communication in medium high voltage automation.

It provides transmission by talking to control centers and breakers at the same time. It also processes data with precise timestamp. eRTU-X101 reads data from meters in the field with serial or ethernet protocols. Simultaneous communication can be achieved with different brands of meters on the same line over different protocols (for example, Modbus and DLMS).

It has been designed in a modular structure and can provide different types of communication in the field at the same time. This optimizes application-specific hardware cost. It uses the EtherCAT protocol in terms of speed, security and uninterrupted communication in its internal communication with its additional modules.

The EUTO RTU protocol converter is designed to facilitate better communication between different devices, many from different vendors using different protocols.

Protocol conversion can be done by computers via software, provided there is access to the data. However, for special devices that do not have a general purpose operating system like that used on a PC, they can handle the protocol for which they were designed. Therefore, they are incompatible with devices from other vendors. This is true for most network protocols that use a different protocol (Fiber Channel Protocol) than Ethernet as different networks using different media such as fiber. Protocol conversion is usually done by routers and switches, but if this feature is not supported by the router, a separate protocol converter can be installed.

EUTO RTU Protocol Converter Advantages

  • eRTU-X101 is designed in a modular structure and can provide different communication types in the field at once. Thus, application-specific hardware cost is optimized.
  • eRTU-X101 and EUTOPIA software are directly connected to each other with the web-based IoT protocol developed between them. In this way, there is no need to use additional software or hardware in the middleware.
  • System setup is designed to be fully configurable via advanced visual user interfaces.
  • Advanced visual icons are already available on EUTOPIA, especially for energy automation applications.
  • All units of the solution directly support standard protocols used in the field. Therefore, it is suitable for field integration without the need for additional work and development.
  • eRTU-X101 uses EtherCAT protocol in terms of speed, security and uninterrupted communication in its internal communication with its additional modules.
